Timmins, Ontario – Northeastern Public Health (NEPH) is joining the global effort to end new Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections and to support people living with HIV/AIDS this World AIDS Day, Monday, December 1, 2025. HIV remains a significant Public Health concern, with an estimated 1,848 new infections in Canada in 2022.
“Testing is the only way to know if you have the virus,” says Rachel Kozlow, Public Health Nurse at NEPH. “Because HIV and other bloodborne infections may not cause symptoms, regular testing is essential if you have unprotected sex or share injection equipment”. Individuals who engage in activities that increase the risk of acquiring a bloodborne infection are encouraged to speak to their health care providers or consult a public health nurse at NEPH about HIV testing.
To raise awareness and promote testing, NEPH and community partners will distribute red scarves throughout downtown areas across the NEPH area. The scarves represent the red ribbon—an international symbol of compassion and solidarity for those affected by HIV/AIDS.
