Timmins, Ontario - Northeastern Public Health (NEPH) has been notified that an American Crow has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The last infected birds reported for the area were in 2024.
“A report of an infected bird is a good reminder that although the overall risk of a person becoming sick with West Nile virus is low, residents are encouraged to take steps to protect themselves against mosquito bites,” says Suzanne Lajoie, a program manager with Northeastern Public Health.
West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes acquire WNV by feeding on infected birds. Most people infected with the virus have no symptoms, but some people may experience mild symptoms including fever, headache, body aches, mild rash, and swollen lymph glands. In very rare cases, the infection can affect the brain and cause severe illness.
Prevention of mosquito bites is the key. People can use simple steps to protect themselves from WNV:
· Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes, and socks when outside, especially from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
· Use an insect repellant containing DEET or Icaridin and follow manufacturer’s directions for use.
· Repair holes in screens, windows, and doors.
· Eliminate sources of standing water in yards so mosquitoes cannot lay their eggs.
· Empty bird baths every other day and cover rain barrels with tight-fitting mosquito proof screens.
Residents who find a dead bird can report it to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at 1-866-673-4781. Do not handle dead birds with bare hands, instead use a shovel to dispose of it or, if handling is unavoidable, wear rubber gloves and wash hands with soap and water after handling.
