NEPH Region — March is Nutrition Month, and Northeastern Public Health (NEPH) is celebrating this year’s theme: “Nourish to Flourish”. This message is simple but powerful. It reminds us that food plays an important role in helping us grow, think clearly, and connect with others. This message is especially important here in Northeastern Ontario, where access to affordable foods can sometimes be challenging due to distance, weather, and higher food costs.
Physical Health
Food is more than just energy. Food gives our bodies the nutrients needed to grow and function. Eating a variety of foods, like vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and protein foods, helps children grow and helps adults stay strong and agile. Balanced eating can also help lower the risk of certain chronic diseases.
Mental Health
Food affects how we feel and think. Eating regular meals and snacks can improve focus, memory, and mood. When people do not have enough food, it increases stress and makes it harder to concentrate. In the Northeast, 29.1% of households do not have access to enough food. Improving food security across Northeastern Ontario is an important part of supporting mental health in our communities.
Emotional Health and Community Connection
Food is about culture, comfort, and spending time with others. Sharing meals with family and friends can help build relationships and connection.
This Nutrition Month, NEPH encourages everyone to think about ways to “Nourish and Flourish” close to home. You can:
- Share a meal or snack with a friend or neighbour
- Cook together at home and try new or traditional foods
- Use Canada’s Food Guide as inspiration for balanced meals
- Donate or volunteer at your local food bank or school food programs
- Support other local programs that improve food access (e.g. community gardening, Good Food Box programs, meal programs, etc.)
