Sexually Transmitted Infections

The Sexual Health Clinic offers various testing methods and free treatments for STIs. Most sexually transmitted infections don’t cause symptoms, making routine testing very important in reducing the spread. Whether you have symptoms, risks, or want routine testing for an STI, a nurse will be able to assess your needs and provide you with or direct you to appropriate services.

Cervical cancer screening (HPV testing)

Cervical screening (formerly Pap test) checks for types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that can sometimes cause cervical cancer. It also checks for cell changes in the cervix caused by these types of HPV. It has replaced the Pap test because it is better at helping prevent cervical cancer. The Pap test only checked for cell changes in the cervix, but the cervical screening test can check for cancer-causing types of HPV and cell changes.

 It does not check for:

  • other types of HPV that do not cause cancer
  • other cancers in the reproductive organs, such as ovarian cancer
  • sexually transmitted infections, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea or HIV/AIDS

Be sure to check out  https://www.cancercareontario.ca/en/types-of-cancer/cervical/screening  for information about when to start screening, how often, and what the results mean. If you require screening and don't have a health care provider, call us to book an appointment.
